Like the rest of the population, deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind clients need legal representation. As all attorneys are aware, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. This includes potential clients with hearing impairments. That said, the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living (DAIL) maintains a roster of attorneys who have indicated they are open to serving Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf Blind Clients. If you would like to be added to the list, or for more information, please contact Laura Siegel, MBA (She/Her) Director of Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, and DeafBlind Services at DAIL: Laura.Siegel@vermont.gov.
Siegel and co-presenter Cory Bruner, an American Sign Language Interpreter, presented a 90-Minute CLE for the VBA in February 2024 titled, “Working Effectively with DHHDB Clients.” This session carries 1.5 hours of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion credit. It is available in the digital library on the VBA website for VBA members to view for free – click here for the registration page.
