There will be a vacancy on the federal bench in the District of Vermont created by Chief Judge Geoffrey Crawford’s notice of his intended election of senior status. Senators Sanders and Welch are now accepting applications for that expected vacancy. Potential applicants are advised that the duty station for this position is Rutland. The senators are engaging a joint Judicial Nomination Advisory Panel to screen candidates and make recommendations to the senators, who will make a final recommendation to the White House to fill the vacancy.
Candidates interested in being considered for appointment to fill the vacancy should provide the Committee with a completed Questionnaire, which is available on the website for the Vermont Bar Association (https://www.vtbar.org/). A complete application will consist of the Questionnaire along with three professional references and a personal statement. Only individuals who have completed the application will be considered. The deadline for returning a complete application is Friday, December 1, 2023. Instructions for submitting the application are contained in the Questionnaire document.
As detailed in the Questionnaire, applications will be held confidential to the greatest extent possible. For those candidates forwarded to the Senators, their applications will be shared with the Senators, their staff, Senate Judiciary Committee staff, and the White House Counsel’s office. Any candidate submitted to the Senators may be subject to a full background investigation by federal law enforcement, further vetting by Senate staff, and Senate confirmation.
