Vermont’s superior court judges serve six-year terms and are then subject to a judicial retention process. The Joint Committee on Judicial Retention oversees the process. After various hearings and meetings, the Committee provides its recommendations on retention to both chambers in a joint assembly where the vote is taken by secret ballot. The Committee began its work for this year with a meeting on Jan. 29. At the meeting, they established Feb.11 at 7 PM as the date and time of the public hearing at the State House.
There are six judges who will be subject to the retention process this winter. In the first group are Hons. David Barra, John Valente, and Thomas Walsh. In the second group are the Hons. Benjamin Battles, Michael Harris, and Rachel Malone
The full schedule of events should be available shortly on the Committee’s web page.
