As a security measure, the Vermont Judiciary’s Public Portal, where attorneys access case records, is not available outside of the 50 US states and Canada. “United States” means the 50 states and does not include US territories. If you’re planning to travel outside of the US or Canada and need to access case data while away, you’ll need to arrange with colleagues or support staff back home to get Public Portal information.
The Judiciary has updated the FAQ section on its website to advise of the limitation. See: https://www.vermontjudiciary.org/about-vermont-judiciary/public-portal
NOTE: Odyssey File and Serve does NOT have any such geographic limitations. Filers can access Odyssey from any location.
Court Users Group
The geographic limitation on the Public Portal was a recent topic of discussion between the Judiciary and the VBA’s Court User’s Group. The Court Users Group, headed by attorney and VBA Past President, Elizabeth Kruska, provides a channel for attorneys to share questions and comments with the Judiciary on such issues. The Group and the Judiciary have regular meetings. If you have an issue or question regarding e-filing or the Court’s Case Management System, you can share that with the group by contacting Elizabeth at ekruska@ekruska.com.
Of course, the Judiciary also maintains voluminous training materials on its website and also provides technical support to users. See https://www.vermontjudiciary.org/about-vermont-judiciary/electronic-access/electronic-filing.
