The Vermont Judiciary Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion was established to identify disparities in our justice system, understand the causes, evaluate solutions, and implement changes. The Commission’s work will address disparities amongst individuals involved in court proceedings as well as internal Judiciary practices, such as hiring, training, and retention.
The Commission, which consists of stakeholders from the judiciary, advocacy organizations, government, and the VBA (represented by past VBA president Robert Fletcher), has organized a series of Community Forums to elicit public input on the topic. Forums have already been held all around the state. The final three are scheduled for June 6 in Guildhall at the Essex County Courthouse, June 7 in North Hero at the Grand Isle County Courthouse (the forum had originally been scheduled for May 31), and the final forum is scheduled for June 29 in Montpelier at the Washington Civil and Probate Courthouse.
For more information, see the Commission’s webpage.
