VBA Pro Bono Award Will Go to Dickson, Kennedy, and Lawrence

The Vermont Bar Association will honor attorneys Judith F. Dickson, Kathryn A. C. Kennedy and Peter M.  Lawrence with its 2013 Pro Bono Service Award.  The award will be presented at the VBA’s Mid-Year meeting on Friday, March 15 in Burlington.

Judy Dickson was nominated by her son, Jeffrey Dickson, Esq., and by Angele Court of Vermont Volunteer Lawyer Project for her work as a volunteer with the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program in Colchester.  After her retirement from a different field of law, Dickson learned immigration law and now provides up to 40 hours each month helping new Americans obtain green cards.

Kate Kennedy was nominated by Judges Bernie Lewis and Harold Eaton, and by Michele Olvera with the Network Against Domestic Violence.  After funding cuts eliminated her job with Have Justice- Will Travel, Attorney Kennedy opened her own law office in Randolph and completed her remaining HJ-WT cases without charge.  She also serves as pro bono and low bono attorney in cases in Family and Probate Divisions in Washington and Orange Counties, and has acted as guardian ad litem for children in several court cases.

Peter Lawrence of Barr, Sternberg, Moss, Lawrence & Silver in Bennington was nominated by Judges David Howard and Cortland Corsones and Bennington Superior Court Clerk Mary Frost for his pro bono work in many arenas.  In addition to serving as pro bono and low bono attorney for individual clients, Attorney Lawrence has been Acting Magistrate and Acting Judge, organized and taught the Pro Se Education course in Bennington Family Division, and served as attorney for children.  He also donated countless hours on the Family Court Oversight Committee and the Family Rules Committee, and organized and volunteered with the visitation master project in Bennington County.

A total of 11 attorneys were nominated for the pro bono award this year.  Included in this remarkable group of dedicated volunteers were Rebecca Rice from Rutland, Gertrude “Trudy” Miller from Newport, Charlotte Dennett of Cambridge, and  Deb Lashman, Cindy Broadfoot, Lisa Werner, Sandra Strempel , and Trine Bech, all of Burlington.  All nominees will be the guests of the VBA at lunch on March 15 at the Sheraton Hotel in the Burlington.
