Assistant Attorney General – Agency of Human Services/Department of Health Litigation Unit
The Vermont Attorney General’s Office, Agency of Human Services Legal Division, has an immediate opening for an energetic and talented full-time Assistant Attorney General who will be responsible for representing the Vermont Department of Health (VDH).
The Department of Health Litigation Unit provides legal services to the VDH’s divisions including the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs, Health Surveillance, Maternal and Child Health, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, the Office of Local Health, the Division of Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Injury Prevention, as well as to the Board of Medical Practice. The attorneys represent VDH in administrative hearings and civil litigation in Vermont civil courts, including enforcement actions related to public health measures and lead and asbestos violations. Attorneys also provide legal advice on a host of issues including rulemaking. Work will also include reviewing State contracts, grants, and public records requests. The Unit consists of two assistant attorneys general who work closely with VDH’s general counsel.
Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills and be capable of working as part of a team. Preference will be given to applicants with relevant experience, especially in Vermont, but newly admitted attorneys are welcome to apply. Candidates must be willing to travel and work independently, but within the structure of a government legal team. Self-reliance, IT skills, and knowledge of state and federal health law, regulations and policies are a plus. Candidates must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar, or eligible to waive in.
This assistant attorney general position is an exempt full-time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the State of Vermont Attorney Pay Plan.
