VBA Pro Bono Award to be Presented to Baird and Kiewel

The Vermont Bar Association will honor attorneys Sandra L. Baird and Jean Anne Kiewel with its 2014 Pro Bono Service Award.  The award will be presented at the VBA’s Mid-Year meeting on Friday, March 21 in Burlington.

Sandy Baird was nominated by several members of the legal community, including Angele Court of the Vermont Volunteer Lawyers Project and Chittenden Probate Judge Susan Fowler.  Both recognized Baird’s work as a private attorney willing to take pro bono clients referred both by VVLP and by the Burlington Legal Clinic, where she is supervising attorney.

Jean Anne Kiewel, a solo practitioner in Brattleboro, was nominated by Judges Kate Hayes and Jack Wesley and others.  Kiewel has for many years provided pro bono service to domestic violence survivors and in probate guardianships.  She assisted with the start-up of the Windham County Legal Assistance Project, and has coordinated volunteer attorneys for the pro se litigant’s education class in Windham Family Division.

A total of 11 attorneys were nominated for the award this year to recognize their extraordinary efforts on behalf of the disadvantaged throughout Vermont.   In addition to Kiewel and Baird, nominees included Joseph Bauer of Colchester and North Hero, Beth Danon of Hinesburg, Leslie Hanafin of Bellows Falls, Susan Gordon of Burlington, Clarke Atwell of St. Johnsbury, Vanessa Brown of Bethel, Jeanne Blackmore, Pauline Law and Navah  Spero of Burlington.   All nominees will be the guests of the VBA at lunch on March 21 at the Hilton in Burlington.
